Want to spend the summer exploring Hong Kong with fellow Oxy students? Interested in gaining research experience? This is the program for you!

Spend 6 weeks in Hong Kong, sponsored by Oxy's China-Environment Program and the Henry Luce Foundation, researching a topic of your choice within the areas of air quality, built environment, and food justice. Students accepted into the program will work with Oxy faculty during the Spring semester prior to the summer developing their research idea in preparation for the summer. Students will then spend the summer researching, exploring and learning about Hong Kong and what it has to offer. At the end of the summer, the students will write a final research report based on their findings throughout the trip.

The Summer Grant Provides:
  • Flight cost to and from Hong Kong
  • Housing
  • Stipend for transportation and food during your stay in Hong Kong

RESEARCH

Students may choose any research topic under air quality, built environment, and food justice. Other topics related to the environment that may not fall under those three specific categories are welcomed if discussed and approved by faculty mentor. Previous research topics have included: rooftop farms, investment in renewable energy, and air pollution. The type of research project you want to pursue is ultimately up to you, what is best fit for your research topic, the Hong Kong community and the scope of your topic. Previous research projects have included literature reviews, interviews, partnerships with non-profit organizations etc.

Once you have chosen a topic and have been accepted to the program, you will work with Professor Foong (UEP Department) and Professor Day (East Asian Language and Cultures) in developing your ideas prior to leaving for the summer. Once you arrive in Hong Kong, faculty members at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, where you will be staying) will help guide you as well. The summer is full of support from not only your HKUST faculty advisors, but your faculty advisors back at Oxy through multiple Skype sessions. The Skype sessions will help you stay on track and help answer any questions you may have along the way. At the end of the summer, you research will culminate to a final research report. Links to past research reports can be found here!

HOUSING
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

The program has partnered with HKUST where you are housed for the summer. You are introduced with faculty members there who specialize in your research topic and will assist you with your research project to the best of their abilities (whether that is helping you find organizations to talk to or introducing you to experts on your research area that they know). You have access to all of the facilities (library, cafeteria, gym, pool) at the University and will meet many international students who are simultaneously staying there through other programs. Check out photos of the University below!

CULTURAL EXCHANGE
Exploring Hong Kong!

You are in charge of creating your own research schedule based on your project's needs; therefore, there is lots of time to explore Hong Kong with fellow Oxy students or people you meet at the University! While you are expected to produce a research report, this program is also a cultural exchange program, meaning you're encouraged to engage with what Hong Kong has to offer!
